New York has continually changed the way we enter the subway. Tokens gave way to MetroCards, and the act of paying for a ride has become increasingly digital. Machines change, turnstiles change, and the trains themselves are replaced over time.

Yet beyond the fare gates, something remains familiar.

Inside the subway, strangers still share a remarkably personal space. Someone sits alone with his thoughts. An adult and child share a quiet moment across a train car. People wait, watch, rest and briefly become part of one another’s surroundings before disappearing at the next stop.

These photographs, made on a film camera, look beyond the machinery of the subway and toward the small human moments that continue beneath the city.

“The way we pay may change. The people inside remain the story.”
